In cricket there are few moments as big as the ones created by Virat Kohli especially on nights when India plays Pakistan. As the world watched from Dubai the atmosphere was electric. The stands were packed, the fans were frenzied and the live streams were struggling to keep up with the viewership. In this cauldron of emotions where prayers and anxiety were mixed Kohli’s legend was born and he went beyond the boundaries of loyalty and rivalry.

A Historic Performance

On this night Kohli wrote another chapter in the cricketing history books, 51st ODI hundred and 14000 runs in ODIs. But all these numbers are just add on to a performance that was simply sublime. Kohli’s hundred came in style as he hit a boundary off the last ball of the game, sent Khushdil Shah’s delivery over extra cover for four. This finish not only won India the game by 6 wickets but also took them into the knockout stages of the Champions Trophy.

Masterclass in Strokeplay

The artistry was evident in the strokeplay and the authority with which he played. He has played bigger performances under more pressure and against better bowling but this innings was special for its boldness and panache. There was a vintage Kohli in his body language and intensity as he bossed a good bowling attack with ease.

His classic strokeplay was on full display when he hit a perfect cover drive to reach 14000 runs. But the fireworks didn’t stop there. He hit a massive swipe down the ground off Shaheen Shah Afridi with a flourish and a beautiful drive over extra cover off Naseem Shah. It was as if the electric atmosphere around him was feeding his performance and he was hitting one shot after another.

Staying Grounded Amidst the Hype

In the post match interview Kohli was very calm, “I have a good understanding of my game. It’s about keeping the outside noise away, staying in my space and managing my energy and thoughts. It’s very easy to get pulled into the expectations. My job is to stay in the present and do a job for the team,” he said.

A Night to Remember

But in the heat of the moment he was in his zone, playing to the script he had written for himself. These are the nights for Kohli and he made sure the millions watching at home had an experience to remember.

As the crowd celebrated Kohli’s brilliance shone through, he’s one of the greats of the game. His performance not only sealed his legacy but also this night into the minds of cricket fans around the world, a night that belonged to Virat Kohli.
