Amidst the crowded streets of a marketplace in Delhi, a heart-wrenching scene took place which left many hearts broken. An abandoned German Shepherd, later named Swiggy, was waiting on the saddle of a park scooter for long hours, for her owner to return; hope and despair flashing through her eyes.

On January 14, the passerby Ajay Joe discovered this forlorn dog. He posted a video on social media, revealing the horrifying sight of this German Shepherd who had been left behind like an abandoned object. "This evening a dog was brought to a marketplace in Delhi on a scooter and left behind, in other words, abandoned," said Joe. "This poor dog boarded another scooter and has been sitting there waiting for his owner for the past eight hours."

The Call for Help

As the video went viral online, animal lovers could not help but get a wave of sympathy. Knowing how urgent the situation was, a band of volunteers started working. One of the volunteers stayed with Swiggy until early the next morning, nursing and caring for her, while Renu Khinchi, another volunteer, started working to arrange an ambulance for Swiggy to be ferried to safety.

Eventually, the moment of rescue arrived. Kaveri Rana, an animal rescuer and founder of the Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust, intervened to save Swiggy. In this chaos of rescue, the dog turned out to be female-a fact that had slipped attention in the first round of posts on social media. "While rescuing her and safeguarding her through the night, we never thought about the dog's gender," Joe would later explain. "The constant vigilance of dedicated volunteers was crucial in keeping her safe on the streets."

A Name of Hope

In a poignant tribute to the delivery platform's initiative aimed at uniting lost pets and their owners, Swiggy is the name the rescuers gave her. Echoing sentiments for many, it is a name that radiated hope-in fact, Swiggy stands as a personification of the bond of love between humans and their pets.

The story of Swiggy blew up on social media. Joe spoke for everyone when he expressed himself, stating, "Abandoning one's pets is a sin-a very wicked and cruel one. Pets depend on us for care and love. Abandoning any would amount to dishonoring their trust and loyalty." Rana too joined in the lament, "Cursed be the evil human who abandoned such a sweet, loyal doggo who kept waiting!"
